Chapter 6 – First Day of School (2)
“I would like to ask you to go over to Lui’s Walnut Cookies to buy a few items for me....” Su Tian fished out a $50 bill and handed it over to him, “What say you keep the change for helping me out?”
Even though the encounter was short yesterday, Su Tian could tell from Xi Zhiqiang’s words that by now Xi Yun had already exhibited strong affinity toward money and possibly already started earning them.
But right now, his head was still lowered and he did not give her a response, as though he was still hesitating.
Su Tian noticed the pack of cigarettes that he had been gripping so tightly in his hand that it was almost deformed and she seemed to know what was going through his mind. With an even more gentle tone, she asked, “How about I take the cigarettes up to your dad and you go and help me buy my stuff?”
Su Tian was right.
Xi Yun looked up at her, seemingly having doubts in his mind, and mumbled, “My dad is very mean and scary....”
Su Tian smiled and said, “Don’t worry. I am an adult, I am not afraid of him.”
Xi Yun looked up at her again.
Su Tian, “.....”
Why did he look at her like that? She felt that the little kid was looking down at her.
Xi Yun seemingly pouted a little bit and it almost looked like he smiled a little. Even with all the bruises on his face, he was actually still quite cute.
He handed her the pack of cigarettes and took the money from her as he asked, “Do you want me to buy a little bit of everything?”
Su Tian was a little surprised. Or, should she say no wonder he’d one day become one of the wealthiest men in the world? He was already able to figure out her intention at his age.
“Yes, a little bit of everything. Just a little bit, no need to go overboard.”
Xi Yun nodded again and left with the money without asking another question.
Su Tian went upstairs and knocked on Xi Zhiqiang’s door. She could hear a man shouting angrily even before the door was opened, “Just where the hell have you been? What took you so long....”
When the door swung open, Xi Zhiqiang saw standing outside his door was a fairly attractive-looking girl with a sweet smile that he had never seen before. He swallowed the remaining foul words and said impatiently, “Who are you? And what do you want?”
Su Tian said, “Are you Uncle Xi? I just moved in downstairs. Xi Yun had a stomach ache suddenly and I just happened to run into him so I thought I’d bring the cigarettes up to you first.”
Xi Zhiqiang finally looked a little happier after hearing that. He took the cigarettes from Su Tian and grumbled something about “at least he knew to think about his dad” before opening up the pack of cigarettes, lit one up and puffed away standing right outside the door.
The smell of cheap cigarettes combined with the strong alcohol smell coming from Xi Zhiqiang was very unpliant. Su Tian did not want to stay any longer than she needed to, so she said her goodbyes and went back downstairs.
The entire time, never once did Xi Zhiqiang asked about Xi Yun as though he did not hear that part when she said, “Xi Yun had a stomach ache all of a sudden”.

The time was right after lunch, the hottest time of the day and there weren’t very many customers inside the store. Li Xiuyun was lying on her rattan chair with a fan aiming straight at her. She was thinking about the store across the street from hers and worried that it would take business away from her. What could she do about that?
