Chapter 117 - 0114 In the Name of Family
Chapter 117: Chapter 0114 In the Name of Family
Indeed, it was a helpless situation. Everyone had tried their best.
It was not common for police to forcibly handcuff a person, bring them to the hospital, and have them pinned down on a bed to undergo surgery for a stent placement.
They had made every effort to intercept and notify him along the way. It was not as if they were pursuing a criminal.
“Did Didi company notify him?” Yang Ping sought confirmation.
Officer Wang replied, “The driver reported that the patient in his car was Xie Dongsheng. He had repeatedly informed Xie himself, but Xie believed he was fine with no issues. He thought you had misdiagnosed him and instructed the driver to continue towards the airport.”
Everything that could have been done was done. Stubborn people would always believe they were right.
The atmosphere became slightly awkward. It felt like the meeting was about to end, but no one wanted to be the first to mention it.
Director Guan broke the silence by saying, “There’s another surgery waiting for me. May I leave first?”
Indeed, another surgery was waiting for him in the Chest Pain Centre. These surgeries were all life-saving operations.
Others were also waiting to be saved. To him, all lives mattered. He couldn’t let someone else’s life hang in the balance because of this man.
Director Han shook his hand appreciatively, “Thank you for your hard work!”
“Reach out to me anytime if you need anything,” Director Guan replied.
At some point, Director Zhao of Medical Affairs had also arrived. He had received a call from Director Han, but as he arrived, the meeting was about to end.
There was little he could do to help in such a situation.
“Would it be possible to contact the airport and have a broadcast announcement made as a last-ditch effort?” Yang Ping unexpectedly suggested.
Officer Wang considered for a moment, “Alright, I’ll report back to the station and ask them to help contact the airport for a broadcast announcement. We’ve done all we could. It’s incredible how this man could ignore warnings to this extent.”
Yang Ping continued unfazed, “Why not, as another measure, try notifying his family members? If he’s married, we can inform his wife and hope she can persuade him.”
Those with families would usually have something to fear. This method could potentially work better.
If the man boards a plane and suddenly dies, there would be no way to save him with the limited medical equipment on board.
Yang Ping was unwilling to watch this vitality slip through his hands. It was too much of a waste.
His stubbornness was not a valid reason to give up.
“Are you sure about this?” Officer Wang asked.
Yang Ping nodded affirmatively, “Please!”
He didn’t care if he was seen as a nuisance.
In front of him, Officer Wang saw a determined, relentless young doctor.
But this placed him in a difficult position. The hospital claimed the patient was in danger while the patient said the hospital misdiagnosed him. In such a conflicting situation, relying too much on police forces could lead to a massive mishap, and he would bear the full responsibility.
If there was no dispute, he could go all out with full force and whether it was successful or not, at least he would have tried his best. However in this case, there was a dispute, and according to the driver, the patient seemed to be in good condition.
Caught between the two, Officer Wang hesitated to make a decision.
Director Han took his phone and walked away to make a call, “Hmm, Director Zheng, I need a favor –”
After ending the call, Director Han gently patted Yang Ping on the shoulder, “Director Zheng from the city police department will get in touch with the airport for a broadcast announcement and contact the patient’s family to communicate with him. However, they can only inform, and no coercion is allowed.”
“Understood!” Yang Ping replied. As long as the patient had not boarded the plane, there was still hope.
The blood would gradually form more and more blood clots around the blockage part, resulting in complete obstruction. Subsequently, there would be a disorder in the myocardial electrophysiology and ventricular fibrillation would occur. The heartbeat would eventually stop.
Yang Ping simulated the whole process in his mind. If this were the case, the patient wouldn’t last more than an hour. Perhaps, he was already feeling nauseous and weak with reduced pain around the neck and shoulder but the area of discomfort was likely expanding.
These were mere deductions based on anatomy and physiology. If things were as speculated, he could only stand a maximum of an hour, and once he boarded the plane, his chances of survival were almost nil.
Director Han then turned to Officer Wang and said, “Thank you very much, Officer Wang. I understand your difficulties. I just called Director Zheng from city public security. He will handle it.”
Officer Wang felt relieved upon hearing this, “Thank you for your understanding.”
Officer Wang had a police station at Sanbo and was well-acquainted with Sanbo’s matters. He was aware that Director Han was a capable man at Sanbo and even surpassed two bosses at the Overseas Chinese Building.
It was notable that Director Han was “sworn brothers” with Director Zheng from the city’s public security bureau, a police officer and a doctor, respectively. It was not known how they became sworn brothers.
“My dear boy, we have done our best!” Director Han draped his arm over Yang Ping’s shoulder.
—
In just another one and a half hours, hurry up, it’s a good thing he didn’t waste any time in the hospital, otherwise, all these years of hard work would be in vain.
Xie Dongsheng took his ID card to the automatic ticket machine, hurriedly pulling his suitcase, passed the preliminary security check, found the check-in counter, exchanged his boarding pass, and checked in his luggage.
He took the backpack out of the suitcase and stuffed his wife’s prepared cotton coat into it. Once he arrives in Beijing, he will put it on as soon as he gets off the plane.
His wife was very thoughtful, packing the cotton jacket in a small vacuum bag, so it won’t take much space in the backpack.
With the check-in procedures completed, it was time to move through security and locate his departure gate.
The timing couldn’t be better, there was still a little time left. Xie Dongsheng sat down to rest, reminiscing about the hard years. There had been several opportunities to move up, but he had failed every time. This time, there was no room for failure.
At his age, if he didn’t move up to a middle management position, it would be extremely dangerous. He’s hitting the significant age of 35.
His stomach felt uncomfortable, still nauseous. Xie Dongsheng felt like vomiting, he quickly walked to the restroom, and threw up several times, nothing but a few mouthfuls of yellow bile.
In the past few years he frequently stayed up late, his body wasn’t what it used to be. During his school days, he could play a full soccer game, then still have the energy to stay up all night gaming.
After vomiting, he felt slightly better. The pain in his neck and shoulders had lessened somewhat, but it seemed as if the pain had spread, covering a wider range than before.
Xie Dongsheng returned to his seat to rest, revising every detail of the project proposal in his mind, rehearsing his presentation once again, zero room for errors.
He rubbed his hands together, feeling a bit anxious and nervous, for reasons he did not understand, as if there were unresolved matters on his mind.
A young mother leading her little girl passed by him, he thought about his own daughter, his wife. He wondered if his little girl’s fever had subsided, and worried about the broken light in the kitchen making cooking difficult for his wife.
The announcement rang out, “Attention passengers.”
He was ready to board. Xie Dongsheng got up, tightened the straps of his backpack. Each time he reaches this point of his journey, a bitter-sweet wave of emotion, accompanied by many years of tears and heartache, would rush over him.
From being a rookie in the corporate world to now being able to negotiate such a major project, every step he took was filled with hardship and pain, of which only he truly understood.
The line at the boarding gate began to move forward. Xie Dongsheng was in the middle of it, frequently looking behind.
“Calling all passengers of east airlines flight MU5182, Mr. Xie Dongsheng!”
The call was repeated three times. The voice of the announcement was loud, but it wasn’t until the third repetition that Xie Dongsheng heard his name.
As he moved slowly with the crowd, he kept his ears pricked up.
“Please stop boarding immediately. You have been diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction. You are in danger at all times. Please ask for emergency medical assistance immediately!”
Xie Dongsheng stopped walking. The news had already reached the airport. Could it really be so serious?
He stood still, undecided. Success was right in front of him, within his reach. Was he really going to give it all up?
The persistence of Sanbo Hospital far exceeded his expectations. If the Didi driver had informed him, he would have only hesitated slightly without deviating from his decision.
Now he’s starting to waver, but… But?
The people behind him saw he wasn’t moving and reminded him. He didn’t hear them and they all moved around him.
His pocket vibrated. Xie Dongsheng pulled out his phone.
It was his wife’s voice, “Honey, where are you? You haven’t boarded the plane yet, have you?”
Her voice was urgent, filled with tears.
“Daddy! Daddy!” His daughter’s voice came from the phone as well.
“Honey! Please, believe the doctor! You are having an acute myocardial infarction, and you’re in danger at any moment. Go find the nearest emergency medical station fast, have them send you to the nearest chest pain center in an ambulance. Listen! I don’t need anything else, just you, safely and healthily returned. Keep your phone on, our baby and I will be waiting for you. I implore you, in the name of me and our child, in the name of our family–.”
“Daddy–”
His daughter’s cry!
Xie Dongsheng stood still, unable to move a muscle. He was suddenly overwhelmed, tears instantly began to stream down his face.
The boarding gate was empty, the line had moved through completely. Everyone was hurrying forward, and the airport staff seemed to be urging him.
He suddenly came to his senses, ran to the nearest emergency medical station, gasping for breath, “Help me! I’m having an acute myocardial infarction, I could die at any moment. Please send an ambulance to take me to the nearest chest pain center!”
He clutched at his chest, gasping for breath!
The doctor looked shocked at first, then immediately grabbed the phone to call the airport’s emergency center for an ambulance.
A nurse pushed in a stretcher bed, and together with the doctor, they helped him onto the bed.
He was then rushed out of the waiting area through the emergency exit.
