Chapter 114 - 0111: New Base_2

Chapter 114: Chapter 0111: New Base_2

Xiao Su had always stayed by Yang Ping’s side, helping him roll up his sleeves, assisting him with his limbs, making it look as if she was the one unpeeling the vaseline gauze from her own hands.

Director Han was a bit older, but he had been young once, so he understood immediately and chuckled softly.

After changing the bandages, Director Han felt reassured. They were all superficial scratches.

“Let’s talk in the office.” Director Han gently placed his tweezers in the dressing tray as Zhang Lin cleaned up the rubbish.

Everyone went to the doctors’ office and settled down while Cai Qiaojun arranged the cups and poured the tea.

Director Han was all smiles. “I guess you didn’t understand?”

Indeed, they didn’t understand. Wasn’t the General Orthopedics ward supposed to be in the Overseas Chinese Building? Why was it here?

Director Han’s fingers rhythmically tapped against the table, playing an unknown tune. He paused for a moment before saying: “From now on, General Orthopedics will be based here. This will be our new headquarters. The fifth floor, formerly the day surgery centre, will now be our exclusive operating room. Everything from the anesthesiologists to the operating room nurses, and even the rehab therapists, will all be specially assigned. Even the parking lot of this building will be reserved for General Orthopedics. Xiao Liang, Xiao Su, I invite you to join General Orthopedics. Any objections?”

Why would there be any objections?

No need to mention Xiao Su, Liang Fatty had always been hanging around with Zhang Lin’s clique.

“Director, are you saying that we’ll have our own operating room, anesthesiologist, surgical nurses and rehab therapists?” Tian Yuan was a bit excited. This was the model he had always admired.

In Europe and America, day surgery centers adopt this model, an independent one. In such a combined cooperative model, efficiency is extremely high: eighty percent of surgeries can be conducted and discharged within 24 hours.

This model is equivalent to having an integrated team, strong and formidable.

But due to limitations of medical policies, medical environment, and a lack of family doctors, most orthopedic surgeries couldn’t be performed under this model. However, this efficient model can still be utilized to shorten hospital stays and achieve speedy recovery, which is now the direction General Orthopedics is heading towards.

Director Han confidently said, “That’s the idea.”

Song Zimo was a bit confused, “The wards we saw earlier didn’t seem up to VIP standards?”

Director Han waved his hand dismissively, “We’re doing away with the VIP designation. We’re going back to the previous method where any ward can accept patients. Right now, patients from Orthopedics are concentrated on one floor, which was the original plan for our new ward. We’ll continue managing wards as usual, still under the supervision of the Surgical Department in the Overseas Chinese Building.”

“So how will we admit patients? Won’t this cause conflicts with the other wards?” Zhang Lin asked.

In the past, only VIP patients were admitted, which clearly set the boundaries with other wards. Now, admitting all patients would blur the lines with other wards.”

“There won’t be any conflicts. Both the emergency department and the orthopedic outpatient department won’t be sending patients to us. We’ll open a separate outpatient clinic right here on the first floor,” Director Han said confidently.

This essentially meant setting up an independent orthopedic department using the new day-surgery model.

After the explanation, Director Han instructed everyone to get their keys from the head nurse and to put their luggage away. Everyone was present, so they decided to have dinner together at the hospital’s internal restaurant, which was already reserved by him.

After everyone put away their luggage, they all went to have dinner together at the restaurant. Director Han ordered all of the restaurant’s signature dishes.

After the meal, Xiao Su and Liang Fatty wanted to return to the operating room to deal with the procedures for their position changes. Meanwhile, Zhang Lin Xiaowu and the others needed to shift things to the Trauma Orthopedics ward.

Director Han had already discussed the transfer of these two personnel with the Department Director of Anesthesia, and the Head Nurse of the Operating Room.

Director Han called Tian Yuan, Yang Ping, and Song Zimo into his office, poured tea for them, and said: “When we applied to establish the General Orthopedics department, I had mentioned this model. But it was just a casual mention, we didn’t formally apply to the hospital because I was afraid everyone would misunderstand, thinking that we were trying to split up the Orthopedics department. That’s not the case at all, I’m still the Head of the Orthopedics department. Why would I need to set up another separate Orthopedics department? The introduction of the combined cooperative model would be a win-win for all the departments. This General Orthopedics department will become a new driving force. Together with the Microtrauma Orthopedics department, they would be like two engines driving forward. General Orthopedics would focus on bone diseases while the Microtrauma Orthopedics would concentrate on trauma cases. Both will contribute to the advancement of Orthopedics. I’ve already moved all this to the ward in the Overseas Chinese Building. I never thought about activating this place. But last week, Dean Xia approached me for a discussion which lasted two hours. He wanted to give the original day surgery center to me. It was already in place, just needing to be cleaned and maintained before it could be operational. I declined as I was afraid it would cause misunderstandings. Dean Xia told me that during his recent trip overseas, he was inspired and after thinking about it for a few nights, he had a sudden realization. He really wanted me to develop this combined cooperative model, setting the foundation for future departments to establish day surgery centers. I called a meeting with the heads of several departments to discuss this matter. I aimed to foster a high-end market and needed a platform that could perform a full range of Orthopedic surgeries. This was the intention when I initially planned to establish General Orthopedics in the Overseas Chinese Building. Now that the hospital has given me the day surgery center as a platform, I could do without the former. All I needed was an independent comprehensive platform. With this, there would be no need for the other, and the VIPs could be shared amongst all. Tam Boyd was the first to express his support, and the other department heads also agreed. Thus, this change came forth.”

So that was what happened. Director Han had put in a lot of thought.

“Director, you always consider the big picture, without any ulterior motives. I wouldn’t be able to do it, handing over the large Trauma Orthopedics department to somebody else. With the other departments besides strategic planning, you don’t intervene, implementing a sort of federal system. Honestly speaking, I truly admire this broad mindset of yours.” Tian Yuan earnestly said.

“Only through sharing can we expand. If each of us was to calculate their own small gains, it would be impossible to expand. Only by combined efforts to enlarge the pie can everyone benefit,” Director Han said.

“For General Orthopedics, Tian Yuan, I nominate you as the Deputy Director. Dean Xia agreed and it should pass the Hospital Committee without issue. I’ll concurrently act as Director, and the detailed responsibilities will be transferred to you later on. Yang Ping will act as the Chief Diagnostic Physician. He, along with the team, will be responsible for diagnosing and performing surgeries on regular patients. For VIP patients, per the hospital regulations, only Deputy Chief Physicians and above can perform the surgeries. Tian Yuan and I will take care of those. Are there any objections to this allocation of duties?”

Song Zimo agreed, “No objections.”

With Tian Yuan opting not to be the Chief Diagnostic Physician, Yang Ping was the only one left to fill the role.

“The term ‘Chief Diagnostic Physician’ is the new term under this model, which is equivalent to the responsibility of the group leader. From the outpatient clinic to surgery and discharge, you’ll be responsible for leading your team. This way, I can focus on admitting and treating patients in the General Orthopedics outpatient clinic with Tian Yuan. Xiao Yang, are you confident about this? Xiao Song, be sure to help Xiao Yang out,” Director Han said, shaking his head and humming a tune

The current layout of the Orthopedics department was closer to his true intention than the initial plan.

“We will give it our all!” Yang Ping replied.

If he declined at this point, it would seem hypocritical. He didn’t want to disappoint Director Han’s earnest effort and the trust of his colleagues.

“For now, I can only get one anesthesiologist to come over. Regarding the surgical nurses, besides Xiao Su, I’ll see if I can bring another one, but it’ll be difficult,” Director Han said excitedly, forgetting that the tea was hot. He drank too quickly and burned his mouth.

“Let’s all go and check out the operating room!”

Tian Yuan brought a cup of cold water over, and Director Han rinsed his mouth.
