20 - Chapter Xx -- General Could Of Cargi
Sigea Kargi. 68 years old. He is a general of the Royal Army of Juka and a veteran warrior with the title of "General.
"Be like your grandfather. A soldier must never lose. Defeat is death.
My favorite grandmother used to tell me this every day. Defeat is death. These words remained strong in my heart as a child.
Karugi was born into the Shigea family, a family that has served the king as a knight for generations. Karugi's grandfather was a hero who led a small elite force to successfully defeat a mass outbreak of demons from the forests of Lunois.
Karugi loved his grandfather. He had a charming smile as he shook his large body, but once he grasped the sword, he would strike down his enemies as if he were a demon. He loved more than anything the time he spent on his grandfather's lap, listening to his own saga told with a shy smile.
Such a hero comes to the end of his life. He became ill, his strong body was emaciated and he lay on his sickbed with a painful cough. At the moment of his death, he smiled gently at Karugi and told him to "live strong" as he passed away.
Even his grandfather, who was so strong, was going to die. Karugi, who was only six years old, began to have an unusual fear of death.
What can I do to avoid death? Every day I spent thinking about such things. Then, on the day of the first anniversary of his grandfather's death, Karugi remembered his grandfather's will.
"Live strong.
Grandfather was weak. Grandmother said defeat is death. He died because he was weak. So you must be strong. If you are strong, you will not die. Karugi, only seven years old, made up his mind.
After entering the royal school, Karugi always remained at the top. He was as good with a sword as any of his classmates, and he hunted demons better than anyone else in the demon-hunting contests.
In addition, Karugi had one talent. He was good at training people. At first glance, he knew whether a person was useful or not. He helped those whom he judged to be useful in various ways. For those who could do better than me, I praised their talents and tried to acquire them. On the other hand, he continued to help those who could not do as well as he did as many times as he could until they became able to do so.
Before he knew it, Karugi had become a dominant figure in the Royal Schools.
Kargi had a classmate. His name was Barsam. He was the future Marquis of Barsam.
The Barsaam family, which has produced renowned magicians from generation to generation, is known as the "two wings of the kingdom" with the Shigea family of Karugi, which is based on military power. However, the Berthaam boy was not very good at magic, and even less so at swordsmanship and other martial arts. He was a hunchbacked man with bad posture and a thin, blue face, who read books all the time.
Kargi had no respect for this Bertham boy. His instincts told him that he was useless to him.
When he came of age and joined the Royal Army, Kargi was promoted steadily. At the age of 15, there were dozens of families who asked him to marry them. On the other hand, the boy from Barsam worked at the royal court and married the sixth daughter of the same marquis when he was 15 years old as Kargi. The sixth daughter of the marquise family, though he had seen her several times at social gatherings, was not Kargi's favorite, with her sharp, glaring, strong-willed eyes. His friends laughed at the idea of a pale, skinny man and a woman with bad eyes, which they thought was a good match.
He became a father at the age of 17, and as he rose through the ranks, he had more concubines and children. In contrast, when Bertham and his wife finally had a child, the baby died prematurely. Kargi interpreted this as the result of weak children born to weak parents.
One day, the border troops of the neighboring country of Hidata crossed the border and looted the neighboring towns. Immediately, Kargi led his army to the border and destroyed the Heedata army with his brilliant leadership.
This heroism was heard throughout the neighboring countries, and Karugi's fame was further enhanced.
After becoming commander of the army, Kargi devoted himself to the education of the royal army. It is not enough for one man to be strong. Strong soldiers lead to a strong nation. When a nation is strong, it will not perish. Yes, we will not die.
Kargi's education was efficient at best and Spartan at worst. Although he did not train the entire army, he imposed very strict training on his direct subordinates. For example, he organized a small number of troops and trained them to fetch eggs from wyvern nests, an exercise that had a very high probability of death. Naturally, some of the men became wyvern bait, but strangely enough, most of them did not die or even get injured.
As a result, the quality of the soldiers was drastically improved by such severe training. Karugi's army came to be recognized in Japan as the strongest army in the kingdom.
Meanwhile, the eggs of the demons that were brought back to Japan ended up on the tables of the Karugi family. One day, they found a demon that seemed to be a larva of a chief dragon in a river in the forest. The creature itself was easily defeated, but its life force was so strong that it did not die. I took it back to my house and tried to educate it. I only praised him and gave him water and food if he listened to me, and if he did not listen to me, I did not give him water and food until he was about to die.
Although chief dragons are said to be ferocious, this education was surprisingly successful, and the dragons became magical beasts that obeyed Karugi's commands faithfully. Karugi then became interested in this "demon education" and began to take great pleasure in hatching wyvern eggs brought back as part of his training, and thoroughly educating the young to become his followers.
When the king would not attend to his affairs in the palace, he would send his wife to the palace as the chief consort, from whom he would make his speeches to the king. In his bedchamber, the king would give his unconditional approval to his wife's reports without question.
All of Karghi's requests were granted - such an evaluation ultimately propelled him to the top of the kingdom's military." Having been given the title of "general", Karugi had no doubts about the open and open future that lay ahead of him.
Meanwhile, Barsam, who had assumed the title of marquis, was secretly expanding his power within the royal court. Although he had no aptitude for magic or military skills, he showed a prodigious talent for clerical work. He handled a large number of documents quickly and carefully, and devised very efficient laws and regulations. Before he knew it, the Marquis de Berthaume had become the grand vizier who was in charge of all the financial and administrative affairs of the kingdom.
Kargi, who had the king under his control, did not see the rise of Barsaam. However, the Marquis of Barsam sent his wife as a governess to the young Dauphin, who was to be responsible for the education of the next king.
Some years later, on one occasion, Karghi and Barsaam had a confrontation over the increase of the royal army.
The Royal Army should be increased. The Royal Army should be increased. At this rate, we will be destroyed if Heedata attacks us.
"Since the bad harvest the year before last, Heedata has not been able to afford the logistics. An invasion will be impossible.
"Then it is rather an opportunity. We should invade Heedata and expand our territory.
"If you invade Heedata, you will not be able to maintain your occupation. The kingdom's logistics are limited.
"What nonsense! We can take food and other supplies from the surrounding areas!"
You cannot run a country without the support of its people. The first step is to increase the kingdom's strength.
"...I agree with the Marquis. I agree with the Marquis.
It was the Dauphin who broke up the meeting. The other ministers have agreed. It was the first humiliation that he had ever felt, that his opinion was not accepted.
Since the Dauphin became regent, Kargi's words became more and more distant. In this world, the strong always win. The strong triumph over the weak and take what they want. Why can't you understand such a simple thing? Kargi's frustration only deepened.
It is said that the Barsamu family has a great warder. Kargi planned to use this warding master to invade other countries. However, the plan was easily rejected.
"It's reckless to let Linos put up wards and invade other countries. It would be reckless to let Rinos put up wards and invade other countries. If the M! of Rinos is cut off, it will be the end, right? First of all, what are you going to do with some of the areas you occupy? Linos will be used as a warder in the royal court to protect the palace.
That's ridiculous. Why don't we attack them when we can? Karugi's anger was about to reach its peak.
One day he looked at his reflection in the mirror. Her hair had turned gray and she looked a lot like her grandfather. I was now over my grandfather's age. I wonder how long I have left to live. This country is in danger. Something must be done. Karugi made a decision.
Weakness makes a nation weak. Then we must remove that weakness.
He acted quickly. The king's brother, who had always dared to despise his older brother the king, easily joined the royal army. And upon hearing the news of Elsa and Falco's presence in the palace, the 80,000-strong Royal Army sprang into action as if they were the hands and feet of Kargi.
The occupation succeeded more smoothly than expected. While the opposing nobles, royalty, queens, and concubines were captured one after another, the king did not cease his activities with the young girls, and as a result, they were taken away completely naked.
The biggest obstacle was Falco, the great mage, who was taken care of by Madisen. Since he had suddenly cut off his arm, even the great mage was unable to cast magic, and although he suffered a near-fatal wound, he was able to capture him with almost no damage.
All the obstacles in our way have been eliminated. We will have to kill this wizard as well. Losing the great mage and the warder was painful, but it would be worth it. Be strong. Be strong and you will not die. You and your country. Karugi thought and began to imagine his future and what he saw... was a collapsing building.
"Llinos, stop! Kneel down! Kneel down!"
I hear Wighton next door screaming. Why? Before he could ponder the cause, Kargi was engulfed by a wave of buildings and lost consciousness.
