Chapter 15: This is the baby she gave birth to

The tiny infant, having been well-nourished in its mother’s womb, weighed eight pounds and six ounces at birth. Its large, curious eyes shone bright and dark.
The grandfather adored the child, and guests offered their enthusiastic congratulations.
After a while, the little one started to become restless in Elder Piers’ arms and was handed over to a nursemaid who, with his permission, brought him in front of Ruby Green.
Ruby gratefully accepted the child with a seemingly excited expression, but the moment the baby moved closer to her, he suddenly burst into loud cries, attracting the attention of everyone around them.
Ruby, who was still holding the child, was so distraught that she nearly dropped the lump in her arms onto the floor. But facing the eyes of everyone, she could only smile awkwardly, holding the baby in an uncomfortable posture.
Seeing the little one’s cheeks turning red from crying, Abigail’s heart clenched in sympathy. Just as she was about to speak, a clear and pleasing masculine voice sounded from behind her, “Kelly, hold him.”
“Yes.” The nursemaid hurriedly took the child from Ruby, and gently cooed as she rocked him. But no matter what, she couldn’t calm the little one down, his cries only grew louder and his breaths irregular.
Abigail felt a wrench in her heart and wanted to step forward, but she was ferociously held back by Rose, who threatened in a low voice, “Dare you.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Brandon Piers glanced in Abigail’s direction and commanded the nursemaid, “Take him upstairs first.”
Kelly didn’t hesitate, lifting the baby in her arms and making her way upstairs under the watchful gazes of everyone.
Abigail quickly desensitized Rose’s acupoint to release herself and turned to Brandon, “I’m a medical student. May I come along and check on the baby?”
Ruby and Rose were instantly alarmed, and also somewhat disdainful. The Piers were an elite family, and Brandon was of high status. How could he ever agree that a fat girl like Abigail, just because she was studying medicine, could look after the child?
Absolutely out of her mind!
Especially when several people looked at them after Abigail spoke, Ruby looked at them with mockery sparkling in her eyes. She, as the baby’s “biological mother,” hadn’t been introduced to the Piers’ birthday guests at all today. Even if she wanted to hold the baby, it had to be under the implicit permission of Elder Piers. How dare this fat bitch?
At this moment, Lincoln Green, who had gone to hobnob with others, returned just in time to hear Abigail’s request. He reprimanded her, “Stop making a fuss, who invited you here in the first place?”
Clearly, he felt his face had been lost.
Abigail felt the contempt in the eyes of Rose and her daughter, and the scorn in the eyes of those around her, which reached its peak after her father’s words. But she remained calm, her plump body standing still awaiting Brandon’s response.
Brandon paused, thinking about what he overheard today at Sincere Hospital. If it wasn’t for Abigail’s timely and accurate first aid outside the hospital, the patient might not have been saved. Amidst the scrutiny from the people around him directed at Abigail, he noticed the fat girl’s clear eyes and slight smile, “Pullan, take Miss Green up.”
“Thank you, Mr. Piers.” Abigail replied, ignoring the whispers around her. She did not pay heed to Rose and her daughter’s sinister looks either, but hurriedly followed the nursemaid, leaving a crowd of guests who were baffled.
Elder Piers stroked his beard thoughtfully and asked Brandon to help him entertain the guests.
Once upstairs, Abigail entered the nursery with the nurse. She washed her hands using the nearby baby sanitizer and asked anxiously, “Is he hungry?”
The nursemaid tested the child’s reaction by touching his mouth and nodded, looking somewhat troubled, “He should be.”
“Then you should feed him.”
The nursemaid became even more uncomfortable, “The young master is allergic to protein and doesn’t drink milk formula. I have just finished nursing him and I have no milk left.”
“Then you should eat something first to stimulate the milk production. I can help look after him for a while.” Abigail herself had milk, even if this nursemaid didn’t.
“But…” Today’s gatherings meant that the servants upstairs had gone to help downstairs and the nursemaid wasn’t reassured.
“Since Mr. Piers let me come up, he must trust me. It’s not ideal for the baby to keep crying.” Abigail decisively brought up Brandon.
The argument indeed worked. The nursemaid struggled for a moment before handing over the child to Abigail.
Strangely, the moment the baby was in Abigail’s arms, he stopped crying instantly and his pair of peach blossom eyes stared at her curiously.
Abigail’s heart softened. This was the baby she had given birth to.
