Chapter 58 The Secret
"huh- that was random," Jonah said with an eyebrow raised.
"Yeah, my bad. I just thought you had something interesting to share." I said as I leaned forward, giving a more authoritative and keen look.
From the outside, it must have seemed as if I was very confident in the words that came out of my mouth. From the inside though, i could feel my stomach trembling, cringe, anxiety, social awkwardness, inappropriateness, my image, my impression. It could have been any of those things.
It was much more likely that it was a mix of it all.
"hm…" Jonah spoke as she probably wandered about her secret.
"So, while you think about it, where's the washroom?" I asked, feigning the urge to pee.
"oh, just take a right and then the second door in the hallway to left," Jonah explained as I looked at her for signs of movement.
I wanted to be sure that she was not thinking of going anywhere.
Although I wouldn't be 'prying' in her house, I will only be 'intensively' looking at whatever I can see on my way and if I somehow get a little lost on my way, which only includes a basic right and left. It's not prying, is it?
I could only sigh as my brain tried its best to morally justify what I was planning on doing.
"I'll be back in a second," I said as I left without looking back.
Her place was not small in any way; it was much larger than what I had expected.
On my way to the washroom, I walked as slowly as i could while also looking back from time to time to make sure she didn't come out.
I looked around, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
I mean, I didn't have any idea about what I was even supposed to be looking for.
I thought it might be some family issues, but what said that their family was doing great was the amount of happy family pictures all over the place.
Maybe the art around the place would reveal something, but I was wrong, her art choice was so wild that in one room there was a 19th century like oil painting, and in the same room just on the next wall hung an abstract modern piece of art.
Books? nope nothing. The bookshelf I walked across was completely normal, ranging from biographies to fantasies.
What else…
her bedroom was the only answer I had in my mind.
I gave up on the area I had just walked across. There seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary.
As I looked at my reflection in the mirror while washing my hands, it suddenly clicked.
nothing out of the ordinary, no.
There was just too much ordinary. It was almost as if someone was 'trying' to be normal.
No one in their right mind puts that many family pictures all over their place. The art it just seemed like she bought them without thinking.
The books, you need to be some kind of psychopathic or just some nerd to read both biographies and fiction. Maybe it's not that extreme, but it is kinda rare.
just what was she hiding?
I felt an urge to just open the cabinets in the washroom. Something inside me was yelling. The answer was right there.
It was what some people might call the 'sixth sense.
I gripped both the handles with my hands tightly, but as soon as I prepared myself to pull the doors open.
A knock on the door of the washroom shook my soul.
My heart galloped as if trying to escape the enemy army.
"Everything alright in there?" Jonah asked from the other side.
I had taken too long.
Should I just say I am taking a shit? That should give me some more time. But no, it could make me look more suspicious than ever.
"Yeah, sorry, just coming." I replied as unzipped my zipper slowly as to not make any sound and then zipped it back up making sure it was audible.
"No problem, take your time." Jonah replied in a casual tone, but there was a hint of anxiety in her voice.
I opened the cabinet doors as lightly as possible. My hands still shaking with the adrenaline rush I had just received.
But on looking at what was inside, my hands shook even more.
