Gazing into the eerie silence of the darkness ahead, Xu Ruihan muttered, "There is something strange about this place."
Standing beside him, Mu Xichen looked down at his laptop screen and said, "The satellite detected movement within the city, but there are no signs of living beings."
Xu Ruihan raised an eyebrow, feeling curious, and leaned in to study the data on the screen.
As he examined the fluctuation data indicating movement alongside the absence of heat signatures, he asked, "Xichen, what kind of creature could still be moving without emitting body heat?"
Before Mu Xichen could respond, Hua Shengyang interjected, "Plants."
At his words, the three of them exchanged grim looks. Wasting no time, Xu Ruihan turned to the rest of the group and ordered, "Keep moving. We are not staying in Juncheng City tonight."
If his guess is correct, then the movement in Juncheng City is caused by mutated plants. Able to move without making any sound, these mutant plants must be very dangerous creatures. Instead of staying here and waiting for the mutant plants to attack, it is better to leave as soon as possible before the mutated plants discover them.
Though everyone was exhausted and perplexed by the sudden urgency, they didn't say anything. Boarding their vehicles, the group of survivors from Haicheng Base left the outskirts of Juncheng City and continued toward the Juncheng Military Base.
If the road conditions were not too bad, Xu Ruihan estimated they would reach the base within two days.
Four days later, the temperature began to drop. By the eighth day, it had fallen to 45 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the excellent ventilation system, the temperature inside the air raid shelter stabilized at 40 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, survivors who fled Haicheng City and its surrounding cities and villages after the earthquakes and megatsunami began arriving in Juncheng City. Most flocked to the Juncheng Military Base or smaller private bases.
Many refugees and homeless survivors applied for jobs at the Institute of Agriculture, helping to build greenhouses for planting crops, while others joined construction teams. With the addition of this labor force, the first phase of the Juncheng Military Base's construction progressed faster than expected.
With food and water provided by the base, the survivors finally had a way to sustain themselves. Although they could only live in makeshift shacks due to limited construction materials, they earned points that could be used to buy supplies or rent houses at the base when the construction was complete.
The pay was meager, and the food barely kept hunger at bay. However, the base's rebuilding effort base gave them hope and a future to strive for.
As the temperature gradually dropped, survivors who had endured high temperatures of over 80 degrees Celsius found 45 degrees much more tolerable. They seized the opportunity to work diligently, knowing that they needed to prepare for whatever disaster might come next. While the survivors worked tirelessly, Xu Ruihan's team and the group of survivors from Haicheng Base successfully joined the Juncheng Military Base by offering a large amount of supplies. Their contribution gave everyone at the base a chance to breathe and stockpile more food.
Sitting in Xu Qipeng's living room, Xu Boya looked at his second son with tears in his eyes and said, "It's good that you are alright. Father was really worried that something would happen to you after we lost contact."
Seeing his usually stoic father shedding tears, Xu Qipeng felt helpless. Turning to his nephew, he said, "Ruihan, thank you for taking care of your grandfather."
Xu Ruihan shook his head and calmly responded, "Second uncle, there is no need to say thank you between family members. This is what I should do."
Looking at his capable nephew, Xu Qipeng sighed, "You are competent in everything. It's just a pity you are so slow when it comes to personal matters."
At his words, Xu Boya's eyes flickered, and he suddenly declared, "Let me warn you, Qipeng. I have already chosen my granddaughter-in-law, and I won't accept anyone else besides her."
Hearing this, Xu Qipeng gave his father a meaningful look and asked with a hint of helplessness in his voice, "Father, are you sure you can bring that young lady from the Yao family back as your granddaughter-in-law?"
Xu Boya narrowed his eyes when he heard the question and asked back, "What do you mean by that? Have you met with Xiao Ran?"
Xu Qipeng shuddered as he recalled Long Yu's glare when he mentioned setting up a blind date between Xu Ruihan and Yao Ran.
After a moment of silence, he explained, "Father, Xiao Ran has a boyfriend now. He is one of my former subordinates-handsome and very capable. With him by her side every day, Ruihan won't stand a chance. You'd better find someone else to be your granddaughter-in- law."
Hearing this, Xu Boya's eyes lit up, and he excitedly asked, "Xiao Ran is in this base?"
Xu Qipeng thought his father's focus was not on the main problem, but he still answered, "No, but she and her boyfriend have secured some housing spots here. I think they will join the base after the first phase of construction is complete."
Xu Boya sighed in disappointment after listening to Xu Qipeng's explanation. "So you don't know where Xiao Ran is now?"
After thinking for a few seconds, Xu Qipeng replied, "Wu Lian told me she is living with her team at her boyfriend's place near the outskirts of Juncheng City."
Hearing this, Xu Ruihan raised an eyebrow and commented with a hint of interest in his cold voice, "They are really courageous to live near Juncheng City. Don't they know there is a giant mutant plant hiding underground?"
Xu Qipeng chuckled and replied, "With her boyfriend and teammates' skills, they will be fine. According to Wu Lian's report, they helped his team kill the mutant rat king during his last mission. The base still owes Xiao Ran and her team a lot of supplies for their contribution."
