Chapter 1109 Going Through Protocol
1109 Going Through Protocol Nôv(el)B\\jnn
"Now let's see here…"
Ignoring the gazes that were glancing his way every once in a while, the young man focused his attention on the mission board in front of him in the hopes of finding a mission that was suitable enough to be considered his first one.
Recalling the mission he was about to choose before Juba interrupted him, Valyr went ahead and looked at the entire mission board for a while, eventually finding the mission that somewhat clicked with him earlier.
Though, once he got another look at the description of the mission he chose, Valyr eventually changed his mind after pushing his perception to the limit, swiftly realizing that he'd chosen what was considered a comparatively easy mission.
'I guess that's why the board for novice mercenaries are larger than the other ones,' thought the young man to himself, doing a once over on the entire mission board before choosing a mission.
Through there, he soon realized that the difficulty of the missions for novice mercenaries varied quite a lot, with the easiest ones among them being made for those whose strengths hovered between Rank 2 and early Rank 3.
On the other hand, the hardest missions he could find made for novice mercenaries were at the peak of Rank 3, which was undoubtedly a massive jump in difficulty when compared to the easiest missions.
Of course, such a mission was still considered to be incredibly easy for someone like Valyr.
'Then again, whether I choose to go with an easy mission or a difficult mission, I'd only gain one point towards my promotion,' muttered Valyr to himself inwardly, slightly frowning as he looked through the rewards some of the missions gave.
'Huh. An easy mission nets around two merit points at most, while the most difficult one I've seen so far nets around seven merit points.'
'Yeah… even if I consider the fact that completing these missions also give some useful items, that amount still doesn't feel like a lot.'
Clicking his tongue at the thought, the young man decided to move onto the mission board made for 1-star mercenaries, recalling Eivann's brief discussion of taking on higher-ranked missions during their first meeting.
Unsurprisingly, it did not take long for him to find out that the strength needed to complete the missions were increased accordingly, with the minimum level of strength needed now being the middle levels of Rank 3.
On the other hand, the hardest missions Valyr could find on the mission board for 1-star mercenaries were made for those in the early levels of Rank 4, prompting him to look at the rewards the missions gave not long after.
'Now we're getting somewhere.' Of course, with the difficulty being increased, the payout for the missions were also adjusted accordingly, with the minimum amount of merit points he could gain from a mission now being six points instead of two.
Aside from that, completing a mission made for a 1-star mercenary netted him three points towards his promotion, which definitely made Valyr ponder for a bit as to whether he should choose his first mission from the one-star mercenary mission board.
In the end, he decided that the rewards attached to the missions still weren't enough, prompting him to move onto the mission board made for 2-star mercenaries.
At this point, the nature of some of the gazes Valyr was getting changed the moment he appeared in front of the two-star mercenary mission board, causing the young man to look back at them for a bit in slight curiosity.
Sensing a hint of surprise and disbelief from the gazes that had changed, it did not take much for him to understand what was going on, eliciting a faint smile to appear on the edge of his lips as he looked at the board in front of him.
Just like the 1-star mercenary board he'd scrubbed through earlier, the missions for 2-star mercenaries had also increased in difficulty. However, the minimum strength for the missions remained the same.
If anything, it was the maximum difficulty of the missions that increased, needing one to be at the middle levels of Rank 4 to have a shot at completing it.
With that in mind, the young man immediately focused his sights on the hardest missions on the two-star mercenary mission board, feeling that those missions were more than suitable enough to be his first mission.
'Just hard enough to pose a slight challenge, but not hard enough to stop me from steamrolling over it if I wanted to,' though Valyr to himself as he continued looking through the board.
Eventually, after experiencing a bit of choice paralysis, the young man was finally able to choose his first mission, taking the mission off the board before heading to one of the counters.
"Kill ten orcs at the early levels of Rank 4," murmured Valyr as he read through the mission's description once more. "Must present parts from the slain orcs once done as proof of the mission's completion."
"Reward: 3 Refinement Jewels, 100,000 XP, 14 merit points, as well as 5 Promotion Points for a Novice Mercenary."
"A 2-star mercenary mission." Looking at the mission that was given to him, the attendant faintly nodded before extending his hand towards Valyr. "Identification token."
22:54
"Pretty decent if I do say so myself."
Certain in his choice for his first mission, Valyr swiftly made his way to one of the counters, giving the mission to the attendant in front of him.
"A 2-star mercenary mission." Looking at the mission that was given to him, the attendant faintly nodded before extending his hand towards Valyr. "Identification token."
Nodding in response, Valyr pulled out the token from his spatial bracelet before giving it to the attendant.
Receiving the token after that, the attendant went ahead and scanned it with the help of a thin tablet, only to be left at a slight loss for words as he looked back at Valyr. "Sir… Ylvar, was it? You do know you chose a mission made for a 2-star mercenary, right?"
"I do." Valyr nodded.
"You also know that you're currently a novice mercenary, right?"
"Yep."
"…I see. You chose it for a hasty promotion." Seeing the confidence in Valyr's expression, it did not take long for the attendant to understand what was going on as he nodded.
"Though there really isn't much point in doing this since no rational person would choose a difficult mission unless if they were confident enough, we must still unfortunately go through protocol," said the attendant to him, faintly sighing near the end. "I must first confirm that you have the strength to complete the mission."
"If you could please cooperate with me and follow me to the strength testing area, that would be great."
"Alright." Nodding at the attendant's words, Valyr soon followed behind the man as the two arrived at a different part of the mission hall not long after.
An even weirder time to be posting another chapter. Is this considered too early? Or too late?
