Chapter 593: Mutual Understanding

Chapter 593: Mutual Understanding

As Brigham and Elysande secretly left the elf's estate, Elysande asked in a hushed tone, "What was in that scroll to have triggered such a reaction from you?"

For as long as she could remember, Brigham had always been a stoic person who barely gave in to his emotions even when the tides were against him. For him to have such a strong reaction meant that the information in the scroll was of paramount importance.

Brigham first scanned the surroundings. It was close to midnight and there were barely any people loitering around in the affluent Uptown Quarter, except for the people from the city watch on night patrol.

The two were wearing cloaks that hid their identities. They had also cast concealment spells on themselves so as not to garner unwarranted attention. Despite that, Brigham chose to remain cautious as he transmitted his words through Mind Whisper.

'The Umbra Thieves are planning to disrupt our trade routes in the surrounding kingdoms. Some of their spies have already infiltrated our various businesses.'

Elysande gasped in shock, nearly faltering in her footsteps. She couldn't even begin to imagine just what kind of organization the Twilight Brotherhood was to have gathered such intel even before they could have.

The next moment, a flicker of determination flashed in her eyes. She replied through the same spell, 'If the Brotherhood's claims are true, we may have just found the weapon to deeply strike the Umbra Thieves.'

Brigham nodded. He then looked toward his daughter and asked, 'Do you think we should ally ourselves with them?'

Elysande had never known her father to ask her opinion on matters relating to the family. It was always him teaching her about the reasoning behind his own decisions but never asking for her input. This was a first.

She believed it was him trying to make up for the earlier incident when the relationship between him and Kissinger had been brought to light by the dying Alvertos.

Putting such needless thoughts to the back of her mind, she nodded in response. 'They seem to be the real deal. If their claims about being even wealthier than the Empire are true then we will have greatly benefited from this alliance. It will ensure the family's prosperous future in Ravenfell without a doubt.'n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

'That's not what I'm asking,' said Brigham through mental transmission. 'I'm asking if you trust them?'

Elysande couldn't help but scoff. 'Trust them? I just met them. How can I trust them?'

But a moment later, she added, 'However, I do trust Adam.'

The pair had been in enough battles, raiding the Umbra Thieves' bases, that they had grown close enough to call each other comrades. Either one of them could trust the other person and know that they had their backs.

This was a mutual understanding fostered on the battlefield amidst blood, sweat, and tears. Brigham deeply looked at his daughter and then nodded. His mind swirled with thoughts and emotions as the scrolls in his person felt heavier than they should have.

For within them lay the decision to alter the future of the Flynn Family forever.

...

Inside the Ambermind Manor, Elrick and Thalren had already left after bidding farewell. The former had left to make arrangements for the alliance between the Brotherhood and the Flynns, while the latter had already departed to his quarters to sleep.

Only Krummor, Adam, and Daneli were present in the private library. They were sitting by the fireplace in silence. The dwarf was busy enjoying the taste of tobacco after a round of productive negotiation, while the young elf and the human patiently waited for him to finish. "Adam, you will be assigned to maintain contact with the Flynns," Krummor suddenly said. "Yes, my lord." Adam leaned forward in his chair, involuntarily straightening his back. Once again the library descended into silence with the only sound of the dwarf's inhalation and exhalation, along with the crackling of the firewood. Neither Daneli nor Adam dared to speak up. They were asked to stay back by the dwarf, and they obediently did.

"I heard you were interested in the journals left behind by the founder?" Krummor spoke up once again. Although his eyes were closed shut, everyone in the room knew who he was talking to.

Adam wasn't flustered in the least. In the past seven years, he had taken up many missions by the Brotherhood and had always requested for the founder's journal to be the reward. Alas, the merits that he had accumulated weren't enough for such a reward.

The only reason why he was even allowed to study the journal in the first place was because he had achieved the glorious feat of taking down a Rank 3 - Mana Vortex Magus during the mission in Stratford.

The Brotherhood treated the journals, or anything left behind by the founder as divine relics. It was only natural for the higher-ups to refuse when an Agent asked for them. One had to accumulate a lot of merit to get thier hands on such items.

Furthermore, Adam wasn't the only one vying for the journals. There were countless other Magi in the organization who had tried to decode the strange characters written in the journals, hoping they could gain arcane enlightenment.

Alas, all of them had failed. Deciphering the language wasn't easy, especially when the language was as complex as Ethor.

Since several of the Brotherhood's scholars wanted to study the founder's journals, Adam wasn't worried about drawing any suspicion when he too asked for the journals as mission rewards.

"Yes, my lord, I find them very fascinating," he said.

Of course, he found them fascinating. He had already studied, and even memorized, the founder's journal he had received as a reward.

Not only did it contain the founder's understanding of runes, but it also contained daily journal entries of his life in his home planet. However, what was truly interesting about the contents of that journal were something else entirely.

Adam had found bits and pieces of information about how the founder had found his way to Tron. If he could get his hands on all the other journals left behind by the founder and piece together all the clues, he believed he could then find a way out of this planet.

That is why he had been so active in pursuing those journals. It was his ticket to the Greater Universe!
