Chapter 103: Betrayal over Betrayal?
The Captain of the vanguard spy squad was having a bit of trouble, the fact that he lost those two earlier wasn't helping either. Because where are they?
They are supposed to be here by now, trying to attack the black axe, and their job is to see if they can cause enough ruckus. Then, the spies will give the signal for their main force to attack.
Or, if not, capture the boys for the black axe and kill them before they can say what they know. Either way, the silent dagger doesn't intend to lose tonight.
But the problem is where are the baits?
"Captain, can it be that they've entered without us knowing?" One of his squad members asked.
The Captain gave it serious thought. "That's possible, but I have my team around every entry point and place where they can try to sneak in.
"Besides, the baits believe that their poison will work on the black axe, so they should be confident."
"So the poison won't work?"
"It should work but not powerful enough to shut off the power of silver ranks, even temporarily." His eyes were fixed on the two motionless guards that stood in front of the gate.
Suddenly, a painful woman's scream tore through the night; it rose in a piercing shout that cut off suddenly, but the silence it left behind made everyone shiver. It sounded like she was being tortured.

Things happened fast then. He heard the sound of running feet from the house and then the sound of shouting. One of the guards in front of the gate entered with a run to know what was going on.
The Captain wanted to know as well. "Dispatch that guard and be ready for entry. Make sure you use the big sword."
They have to be careful here, nothing must be traced back to the silent dagger unless they are ready to go all out. The Captain then brought out a piece of paper with symbols written on it, he tore it and whispered. "All squad members should assemble here now, we will go in from this side. Now."
The Captain stepped over the body of the guard as he entered the compound. He still couldn't believe their security was this lax because their main force went on patrol.
He raised his fist and then listened hard. He heard the sound of battle coming from the building, but he couldn't tell exactly who was winning or not.
But those two bastards found ways to sneak inside. "We go in, we'll observe but kill anyone who sees you. Remember, the big sword!"
Jael was covered in blood. Most of it is not his. Even though they have been robbed of their mana, the Awakeners are still a big trouble with their amount.
'Huff! Huff' Jael began to walk towards the last room he hadn't checked‐ the guest room. Each step he took left a print mark on the ground.
Behind him was a pile of bodies cut up by numerous fangs as sharp as any sword. The other two silver ranks have been taken care of as well, but they left Jael with a wound to the left shoulder that the healing potion was finding difficult to take care of.
He had killed more than he thought he would, why do they have to all come at him like that? He closed his eyes in front of the guest room door and took a deep breath. "This is it."
He opened it and saw exactly what he knew he would see– an empty room. Jael froze, then he barked out in laughter, his green eyes sparked like uncut gems. "So it's like this...!!"
Hermit's warning came just in time, and he spun, swiping his out and up, deflecting two sword strikes meant for his head. His right hand shook from the force and he knew they were not from the black axe.
"Silent daggers." He hissed. He turned and five clothed figures arranged themselves before him.
The Captain frowned at what he was seeing. The man who looked like a gentleman rich man just the day before was covered in blood and a bit of flesh, and his hand...what's that monster's hand? "You don't sound surprised."
Jael moved a few feet back; he wasn't at full strength, and fighting five Skilled Iron rank wasn't part of his plan– it was, but it came faster than he expected– especially that leader. "Who else will try a sneak attack like some lowlife dog?"
The Captain raised his hand and gestured with military efficiency, and his squad spread out and began to move towards Jael in a half circle. "No, it's more than that. It's like you were expecting us or something. Just how."
"It's not hard to deduce when you put your head to it," Jael flashed a smile but it came out more like a wolf baring its fangs. "Do you think we are just strong? Of course, we are also smart."
The thing is that the Captain couldn't disagree, they managed to lose them, and then they sneaked into the building without them finding out. But about strength.. "Do you think you can take us on? You won the black axe because of tricks but it's different for us. We're at full strength and we've honed our Iron rank power for years."
"I read your file and you're just a new Awakener who started the climbing. Don't be arrogant because you might not even climb past floor 90 when you can't rank up."
Jael sighed weary. "Aren't you just projecting your past failures on me?" He had to keep them talking, Jael already used too much power from Hermit and the Onus tonight, so he's only keeping them busy to buy time to build power. One massive shot.
Although the Captain recognized the bait, he still bristled. "You shit-covered bastard. I've been ordered to kill you but I think I should do more than that!"
Jael grinned. "So the silent dagger betrayed us. It makes me feel less guilty."
"What?"
